Watch Taylor Swift Perform at Billboard Before She Was Famous
Taylor Swift may be Billboard's Woman of the Year, but we remember Swift when she was just a girl of 16. Watch her perform "Tim McGraw" and "Picture to Burn" at Billboard HQ in July 2006.
Taylor Swift made a rather large statement about her status in the music business during 2011 by simply placing a request. Entranced by Nicki Minaj's hit single "Super Bass," she invited Minaj to come out to the Staples Center in Los Angeles and perform the song in a surprise appearance during Swift's concert in August. In the aftermath, Justin Bieber asked if he could do a guest spot with Swift. In short order, the singer/songwriter was lining up musicians in many of the major markets to add a little local flavor to the night: Jason Mraz in Los Angeles; Usher and T.I. in Atlanta; Shawn Colvin in Austin; Jim Adkins of Jimmy Eat World in Phoenix; Ronnie Dunn, Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney and Paramore's Hayley Williams in Nashville; and Selena Gomez and James Taylor at Madison Square Garden in New York, as her 2011 tour concluded.

"I'm just as shocked by it as all the fans are in the audience," Swift says of her guest stars, "the fact that they would spend their evening coming out and playing for free for my fans."

That gesture, made by artists across a variety of genres in numerous cities, speaks volumes about Swift's influence on pop culture in the five years since she arrived with her self-titled debut album on Big Machine Records at the age of 16.

On Dec. 2, Swift accepted Billboard's Woman of the Year award during Billboard's Women in Music event at Capitale in New York. At 21, Swift is the youngest artist ever to receive the honor.

The annual award celebrates the achievements of a trailblazing female recording artist during the past 12 months and acknowledges her overall success and leadership in the music business.

For Swift, the honor comes at the close of a year in which she earned the entertainer of the year award from both the Academy of Country Music in April and the Country Music Assn. (CMA) in November. In May, Swift also won Billboard Music Awards for top country album, top Billboard 200 artist and top country artist.

For most of the past year, Swift has been on a worldwide tour supporting her 2010 album "Speak Now," with dates in Asia, Europe and the United States. The trek has been captured on the newly released Speak Now World Tour Live album and DVD, the former selling 28,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Her 2010 album Speak Now arrived with debut-week sales of 1 million units and has sold more than 3.7 million.

Worldwide, Swift has achieved album sales of more than 20 million and digital track sales of more than 40 million, according to Big Machine Records.

And Swift has donated more than $1 million to charity in the past year. Her efforts have raised money and awareness for causes including clean water, literacy and disaster relief.

The guest artists on Swift's tour stops testify to both her business and personal achievements. On a business level, they recognize the size of her audience and the media splash a guest artist will enjoy by sharing the stage with her.

But those moments are also a testament to Swift on a personal level. While undeniably a superstar, she is likable, inviting, savvy and talented. And she has managed to grow up in public while remaining both sweet and classy.

In October, when Alan Jackson was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, Swift was one of just two acts asked to perform his material for the A-list music business crowd. Swift sang Jackson's 9/11 memorial ballad, "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)," in a manner that balanced the song's emotionalism with a perfectionist's attention to detail. With Garth Brooks, Lynn Anderson and John Oates among the celebrities in attendance, Swift rendered the song as if it were her own, providing a dynamic arc to many of the lines and coaxing a standing ovation. It was just one more moment when Swift proved how she makes sparks fly.

Swift, who turns 22 on Dec. 13, was in the closing weeks of her current U.S. tour when she took time on a day off to speak with Billboard.

Congratulations on being Billboard's Woman of the Year.
Thank you. It is pretty cool.

Just a few weeks ago was the five-year anniversary of your first album, released when you were 16. Now you're Woman of the Year. Where do you see yourself on that scale of girl and woman?
Growing up in this position, making music, writing songs and having everyone hear what I'm going through since I was about 16 years old, now I'm 21 about to be 22 -- I wouldn't have had it any other way. On a scale of being a girl or teenager or woman, I never tried to be the one to label myself which of those three I was. I've just tried to grow up in the most natural and gradual process that I possibly can and make choices I feel are right for me and my fans. Whether I'm a woman now, or whatever, is up to my fans to decide, not for me. I really haven't felt the need to make some bold statement of maturity or make the "dark" record yet.

Given the Woman of the Year honor, what women do you consider to be your role models, and why?
I have a lot of role models. Faith Hill is a big role model. Reese Witherspoon is a role model of mine-she's not in music, but I love everything she stands for. Shawn Colvin is a huge model for me. Her writing has been consistently great and thoughtful and wistful and beautiful. And also-[he's] not a girl-but Kris Kristofferson has been a big role model for me. When I look at people who I feel have really lived their lives and recorded their lives in music so beautifully, those are my role models. They've all taught me lessons just by example.

Indonesian Motley Crue Fans Scammed Out of $60,000
Fake concert promoters apparently bilked Indonesian music fans out of an estimated $60,000 in ticket sales for a Motley Crue show that was never scheduled to happen, officials and news reports say.
Dr. Feelgood, the Theatre of Pain and, of course, plenty of Girls, Girls, Girls are taking up residency in Las Vegas during February.

"Motley Crue in Sin City" will hunker down from Feb. 3-19 at The Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. The 12-show run will include Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 5), Valentine's Day and President's Day, and the band members are promising an extravaganza that will both live up to and surpass their usual theatrical standards.

"It's gonna be just over-the-top craziness," frontman Vince Neil told Billboard.com during a conference call with reporters. "Vegas is pretty much based on big, big shows, and Motley Crue is also. We're putting together a show right now that's something we have never done in our lives. It's a stationary show. It doesn't have to move around, so we can do all kinds of stuff we only really dreamed about."

Neil said the group plans for the production to be "interactive," with even those seated towards the back or the top of the venue "encompassed in the show." Drummer Tommy Lee added that, "I think more and more people are wanting an experience, and we're trying to bring that into this where people aren't necessarily at the show, they're IN the show. We're really trying to design something here that, when you leave there, you're wearing the show. You're taking parts of it with you. It's on you...Why not make it a full-on experience, really? We're putting together moments of this show where the actual audience participates. They're in it. They're around it. It's going to be really exciting."

Neil and Lee did not share specific details to share about the production but Lee said that the show would involve "other entertainers...and not in a musical fashion," as well as dancers in various stages of undress. "It sure would be fun to really do it Vegas style and have there be some nudity, or almost nude," Lee said, to which Neil added, "Basically, Tommy's saying there'll be lots of naked girls on stage." Lee also revealed he'll be using a modified, "even more crazy" version of the rollercoaster-like track that let him play upside down during the Crue's concerts this year.

"Vegas is known for its huge, over the top shows," said Neil, who resides there when the band is off the road. "That's why I think we're a perfect fit for this." Lee, meanwhile, noted that "having (the show) not have to move every night really opens a bunch of doors for us -- literally trap doors."

The Crue, whose last album was 2008's "Saints of Los Angeles," does not plan to include any brand new music in the shows, but Lee predicted there will be some flexibility in the set list from night to night. "I would imagine our plans are probably to switch it up," he said. "If we're doing a Friday, Saturday and Sunday, chances are there might be some people coming to see two shows ore maybe even three if they're there. Who knows? So I imagine we'll mix it up."

The "Motley Cure in Sin City" show dates are February 3-5, 8, 10-12, 14-15, 17-19. Ticket prices are $85 for the general admission pit and reserved floor seating, and $65 for balcony reserved with $129.50-$179.50 VIP packages. The presale has already started; public sales begin at 10 a.m. Saturday [Dec. 3] at www.motley.com, www.thejointlasvegas.com and www.ticketmaster.com. The Hard Rock is also offering vacation packages that include tickets to the show.

Lee and Neil says the Crue will consider returning to Las Vegas for another residency, perhaps for even greater lengths. "If it's successful and works out for everybody, why not?" Neil says. "That's what's great about Vegas -- people from all over the world are here for a few days, then move on, new people always coming in. Basically you're having the world come to you."

That said, the Crue -- which begins a six-date U.K. tour with Def Leppard and Steel Panther on Dec. 6 -- is planning to see some more of the world during 2012. A North American tour is likely, but Lee said whether it will be a Crue Fest package hasn't been determined. "We're still discussing and putting together plans for the summer...planning the rest of our new year," the drummer explains. "Right now we're focusing on getting the Vegas residency dialed in."

The quartet is also reported to be publishing a 10th anniversary expanded edition of its band memoir "The Dirt -- Confessions of the World's Most Notorious Rock Band," but neither Neil nor Lee specified what new material will be included.

Justin Bieber Fashion's Night Out 2011 Billboard Celebrates Season With Holiday Songs Chart

Billboard this week launches its first-ever Hot 100-style ranking of seasonal favorites with the launch of the Holiday Songs chart. Like the Hot 100, the survey ranks tracks based on a formula blending airplay, download sales and streaming data as tracked by Nielsen Entertainment.

Check Out Billboard's Holiday Charts: Songs | Albums | Airplay

The 50-position chart will appear in print and on Billboard.com and Billboard.biz through the holiday season.

Holiday Songs No. 1: Mariah Carey
"All I Want for Christmas Is You"

Topping our inaugural ranking is Mariah Carey's 1994 Christmas classic "All I Want for Christmas Is You." Carey's song also appears on the list at No. 33 in a rendition by Michael Buble that appears on his No. 1 Billboard 200 album "Christmas."

In previous years, Billboard's Holiday chart was based solely on radio airplay on adult contemporary (and a few adult top 40) stations, most of which made the switch to all or nearly all-Christmas music following Thanksgiving.

Because radio gravitates to the familiar, past Holiday Songs charts featured primarily classic Christmas tracks pre-dating this century. With the change in methodology to include downloads, streaming and airplay from all monitored radio stations, the reconfigured Holiday Songs survey presents a more balanced picture of new releases (Justin Bieber at No. 2) and traditional seasonal selections (Brenda Lee, Nat King Cole and Bobby Helms at Nos. 3-5, respectively).

The boys of Hanson are no longer boys -- they're men. Heck, they have eight children between the three of them! And what do men do? They drink beer. Hence, the announcement that the pop trio will soon launch their own beer, called "MmmHops."

After reportedly making the announcement during an event at Oxford University last month, drummer Zac Hanson confirms the news to Billboard.com through a rep. "Yes a branded HANSON IPA beer concept is in the works under the moniker 'MmmHops,'" says the youngest Hanson in a statement. "We're glad to see a bit of buzz around the idea, which has been brewing for some time."

Mashup Monday: Hanson Gets Sweet With Weezer's 'Troublemaker'

"MmmHops," of course, references the group's breakout hit, "MMMBop," which hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 14 years ago. The group recently wrapped a South American tour in support of their 2010 album "Shout It Out."

In September, Zac Hanson told Billboard.com that he is unsure whether he and his brothers Isaac and Taylor want to make another full-length album in the foreseeable future. "We want to do something a little different," says Hanson. "The music industry has changed, so I think we will definitely do another project, but it might end up being multiple small things. We like to innovate and do things we're excited about. I think one more normal, 12-song album isn't what we want to do now."

Lady Gaga: I'm so dedicated

Lady Gaga says it's 'more important than anything' that people realise how dedicated she is to music.
The singer understands there are people who don't like her music.
However, she performs for the minority who love to hear her sing.
'I believe very strongly that there are many people on this earth that really don't like what I do ' or how I sing or what music I make ' but some of those people admire the commitment to the work,' she told the January edition of UK magazine Elle. 'That to me is more important that anything.'
She added that the biggest conception about her is 'that I would ever be concerned with there being a misconception about me'.
Gaga hopes to leave a legacy behind her.
When she is gone, the Born This Way singer wants to have built a reputation as a fearless artist.
'I want to be remembered as brave,' she said simply.
Gaga is currently promoting the promo for her new single Marry the Night.
The video sees the star posing topless as she eats cereal, dyeing her hair blue and playing the piano in the nude.
She has claimed the footage ' which lasts almost 14 minutes ' offers a unique insight into her life.
'WATCH MARRY THE NIGHT VIDEO ON: http://eonli.ne/MTNvid An autobiographical film recounting my past, revealing my struggles + love for showbiz,' she wrote on her Twitter account a few hours ago.
Gaga has told E! that the video was inspired by being dropped by her first record label and fearing her career was over. The star was naked when she received the news and that is why she decided to strip for the promo.
'That's probably the most honest moment in that video of everything I've ever done. My directorial decision was for them to just f**king roll the cameras, because I couldn't go in and out of the moment,' the 25-year-old explained.
'There's something quite comical about the opening of the video, even though it's quite sinister and dark.'
The clip - which was directed by Gaga - opens with the eccentric musician being wheeled through a psychiatric ward by two nurses.
